M. Shannon Bump

M. Shannon Bump, 80, of Elkville, passed away at 10:40 P.M., Tuesday, December 17, 2002 at his residence.
Mr. Bump, prior to his retirement in 1980, was the Director of Information Systems at the Du Quoin Packing Company.  He later moved, temporarily, to Phoenix, Arizona and began work again for the state of Arizona.  He retired from the state position in 1991 and returned to Elkville, Illinois.  For a short while he worked as a programmer for the Carbondale Memorial Hospital.  His last job was as a Head-Start school bus driver for SIUC in Carbondale and Murphysboro and Johnston City.
He graduated from California Western University with a masters degree in business in 1980 after his retirement.  He was also a former member of Mensa.
Mr. Bump was a charter member of the Jackson County Stage Company where he was active as an actor in a number of plays.
Mr. Bump was a World War II veteran.  He served in the Army Air Corp for three years of which two and one half years were in the European Theater before his honorable discharge in 1945.
He was born October 26, 1922 at Topeka, Kansas, the son of Wilson Raymond and Pearle Julia (Nee Pickering) Bump.
He married Reba Mae McCaleb on July 14, 1974 and she preceded him in death on March 22, 2002.
He is survived by a son - Shannon Kevin Bump of Sunset, Utah, two daughters - Laurel Raye Brandon of Florida and Karen Joan Bump of Prescott, Arizona, three step-daughters - Marla Preuett of Wichita, Kansas, Vicki Patton of Makanda, Illinois, and Debbie Horn of Dallas, Texas, nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one son - Ronnie Leon Bump who preceded him in death in March of 1943.
Visitation was held at 3 to 5 P.M., Saturday, December 21, 2002 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.  
Per Mr. Bump's  request no funeral service was held.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
